Whether you wish to advance professionally or lead a healthier lifestyle, you need self-control. Without it, you will waste time and lose sight of your goals. Here’s how to gain mastery over your mindset and achieve success.
Take the reins.
Lack of self-discipline often stems from the idea you aren’t to blame for career setbacks and personal struggles that reduce your success. Sometimes, problems you can’t control influence you. Much of the time, though, mistakes play a role in your misfortune.
Everybody makes mistakes. Those who succeed, however, recognize their follies and learn from them. They advance because they figure out how to do better next time. Unless you note ways you contribute to lack of success, you can’t move ahead and improve.
The first step toward greater self-discipline is to take responsibility for your blunders and use them as stepping-stones to something greater. Be accountable when your career nosedives, your relationship hits the rocks, or your New Year’s resolution goes down the pan. Get used to brainstorming how to improve unwanted situations, rather than blaming people and circumstances you can’t govern, and your success will increase.
Be precise about what you want.
Plenty of people don’t meet success because they aren’t sure of their goal. They have a sketchy idea -maybe they want to lose weight- but not a definite plan.
If someone wants to be slimmer but doesn’t create a precise strategy, noting they want to lose, say, a stone in weight, they have nothing concrete to consider. As a result they are liable to lack guidelines for their behavior and fail to follow a suitable diet and exercise regime.
Discipline isn’t just about striving to improve, it’s also about knowing what improvement means to you and creating a doable plan to follow.
Make sure your plan is achievable.
Your enthusiasm will wane if your plan is so difficult that moving in the right direction feels painful or unmanageable. Aim to increase your earnings by a huge sum in a month, for instance, and you might quit trying after the first week when you recognize you’re nowhere near your target.
No amount of self-discipline will work unless it’s possible to do what you set out to achieve. Develop small steps to your goal even if it means you won’t get there fast. You will gain staying power if you see healthy results as you journey toward success.
Self-discipline will be simpler without fear holding you back. Fear lowers self-confidence, and unless you believe you can do what you hope to do, your self-control will falter. Note misgivings surrounding your goal. What worries you most?
Also, how might you overcome the worst that can occur or avoid it in the first place? Fear will subside if you acknowledge it and consider how it may be reduced.
Understand the hard work required to meet success.
You will have poor self-discipline if you underestimate the hard graft necessary to achieve your aim. When the need to toil arises, you’ll imagine you’ve achieved enough already and can relax.
Most business owners, and anyone who wants to change their life by adopting new habits, must give a vast amount of time to their cause. Recognize the need to work hard to accomplish your aim and you won’t dawdle or falter.
By now, you probably see self-discipline entails not only willpower but organization and a realistic approach too. Note the suggestions made and you stand a good chance of meeting success.
